After an open call, drawing 60 proposals from eight countries, and a lively exchange among a jury of six arts professionals, the artists of the 2018 Farm/Art DTour have been selected! Six regional and international artists will create site-responsive installations along the 50-mile route during Fermentation Fest—A Live Culture Convergence, hosted by the Wormfarm Institute, October 5–14, 2018.
The artists will collaborate with local landowners to draw inspiration from the working landscapes of Sauk County and its rich cultural and ecological histories. Installations—from sculptural to participatory artworks—will respond to farmland, geological formations, and other sites, and invite participation and wonder from passersby as they bike or drive the route.
“The jury faced a particular challenge this year, selecting from so many exceptional proposals,” said Donna Neuwirth, Executive Director and Co-founder of the Wormfarm Institute. “Ultimately, we responded to the growing misperception of an urban/rural divide—and we chose artists who make it their practice to pay mutual attention to land and people, rural and urban life. We’re excited to bring together artists from different perspectives and stages of career, and share their work with returning and new audiences.”
This year, visitors can expect to encounter a true-to-scale, three-dimensional drawing of farm buildings using aluminum tent poles; a large-scale kinetic artwork integrating the feathers of local birds; and interactive stereo view installations of nineteenth and twentieth century Sauk County photographs, among other ambitious projects.
